Seven o'clock at Grotto Beach. The sand is still damp from the night, the dunes throw long shadows, and as far as the mouth of the Klein River you see nobody at all. Only tracks: birds, a dog, the tyres of yesterday's lifeguard quad. Hermanus has one beach eighteen kilometres long and half a dozen that would fit in your palm. Which is the right one depends on what you are after: swimming, surfing, keeping children busy, or simply walking.
West to east
- Onrus Beach, eight kilometres west: a surf beach with waves that carry beginners too, and behind it the Onrus River lagoon, shallow, warm and out of the wind. Blue Flag pilot status for 2025/26 (as of August 2026), with lifeguards in summer.
- Fick's Pool in Westcliff: a small tidal pool among the rocks, down a flight of steps from Westcliff Road. Named after a headmaster of the 1920s, and the swimming spot for the neighbourhood's children ever since.
- Marine Tidal Pool below the Marine Hotel, next to Bientang's Cave: the town's big tidal pool, visible from the Cliff Path. Swimming and snorkelling with no surf and the whole bay in front of you. Bring water shoes, the sea urchins are many.
- Langbaai: a narrow bay among the rocks east of Kwaaiwater, more for surfers than for swimmers, and a good place to sit and watch.
- Kammabaai: sheltered, a small stretch of sand, old milkwood trees for shade. The beach for families who would rather not walk far.
- Voëlklip Beach: lawns for a picnic, a kiosk, waves for surfers, and a view that includes the whales in season. Between Kammabaai and Grotto, with parking.
- Grotto Beach: the main beach. Blue Flag for 2025/26 (as of August 2026), lifeguards in summer, a restaurant and showers at the car park, and then eighteen kilometres of sand running east to the Klein River mouth. The further you walk, the emptier it gets.

Why the water is warmer in winter
It sounds wrong and it is true anyway. In summer the south-easter blows, and it pushes the warm surface water off the coast. Cold Atlantic water rises to take its place, on some days at 13 or 14 degrees. In winter the wind swings to the north-west, the warm water of the Agulhas current comes into the bay, and the temperature sits around 19 degrees. The best swimming day in Hermanus is a windless day in May or September, not the first of January.
In summer you can read it off the colour. Deep blue bay and clear water means the south-easter has been through, and it is cold. Greenish and calm means the water is warm. Locals look at the flags above the Old Harbour in the morning and decide from that whether they swim or walk.
Swimming safely
Grotto Beach has currents that will pull you away from the sand, particularly on an outgoing tide. Swim where the lifeguards sit, between their flags, and only in the weeks they are there. Out of season, stay at the sheltered spots: Kammabaai, Voëlklip near the rocks, the lagoon at Onrus, or the two tidal pools. If you want to swim safely, use a pool; if you want to watch waves, use the beach.
There are sharks in Walker Bay, as everywhere at the Cape. There are no nets. The lifeguards watch the water, and the simple advice everyone here follows holds: not in murky water, not at dusk, not alone far out. The tidal pools are unaffected. Sun is the bigger issue. In December it stands overhead, and the wind keeps you from feeling the heat.
With children
Kammabaai and the Marine Tidal Pool are the places for small children: shallow, no surf, some shade. The lagoon at Onrus is for children who can already swim and want a pedalo. Grotto Beach suits children from the age at which they can read waves, and even then only at the flags. Voëlklip has the lawn, the kiosk and the benches parents sit on while the children are in the sand.

And in winter?
Then the beaches are yours. Grotto Beach becomes a walking trail, eighteen kilometres out with the wind behind you, and somewhere along it a southern right tracking the coast in parallel. At Voëlklip in July people stand in the sand with coffee and look out at the bay where the mothers lie with their calves. Swimming works too, the water is at 19 degrees. What is missing is the lifeguard, so you stay in the pools.
